Background
This rotation is based at the Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (ODPHP), which is within the Office of Public Health and Science (OPHS). OPHS is within the Office of the Secretary (OS) and reports directly to the Assistant Secretary for Health, Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). ODPHP’s mission is to provide leadership for a healthier America by initiating, coordinating, and supporting disease prevention and health promotion activities, programs, policies and information for HHS through collaboration with HHS agencies and other partners in prevention. Through a variety of initiatives housed within and/or coordinated by the office, ODPHP provides the prevention framework for the Nation, leads the Department’s prevention communication efforts, and contributes to the developing prevention science base.
Residents will witness the process of federal health policy-making and will be able to consider the potential roles of preventive medicine physicians in this process. Residents may become involved in various ODPHP activities including the areas of health literacy and health communication, prevention policy, nutrition and physical activity guidelines development, childhood obesity, and Healthy People 2020. They will also be expected to participate in ODPHP’s policy advisory role by commenting on documents and correspondence reviewed by the office. Residents will be encouraged to attend congressional hearings, meetings of national prevention groups, and meetings of federal prevention-related organizations that occur frequently in Washington.

Financial Support
Stipends of $3000 per month will be paid to the resident, as well as a travel allowance of up to $250 per month to help defray costs of traveling to Rockville, Maryland. An additional administrative allowance of $750 per month will be paid to the residency program. Funds for temporary housing may be available for out-of-state ODPHP residents.
