Frequently Asked Questions

Citizenship Requirement

Q: I am currently a non-Citizen but will complete my naturalization process soon and anticipate being a US Citizen by the rotation program start date. Can I still apply to the rotation?

A: You may apply to the rotation program but your citizenship must be in place by the time notifications are made in April. You cannot have a rotation slot held for you pending the outcome of immigration proceedings.

APTR Membership

Q: I don't know if my Residency Program is an Academic Unit member of APTR. Can I still apply without a Resident or Academic Unit membership?

A: You can apply for the rotation without a membership in place, but if awarded a rotation, you or your program must have a current membership. Please email training@aptrweb.org to ask about the membership status of your Residency Program.

Writing Sample

Q: Can I use a peer reviewed publication as my writing sample?

A: You must be the sole or primary author of the publication and select a sample from the manuscript if it exceeds the 4-page length limitation.

Q: What kind of writing sample should I select?

A: The writing selection can be a sample from a Master’s paper or another academic assignment. It does not have to be from published work. The purpose is to evaluate your critical thinking and communication skills.

Q: Does the 4-page limit include references or only the written text?

A: Your writing sample can be 4 pages PLUS additional pages for diagrams and references/citations. Also, your writing sample will not be rejected if it slightly exceeds the page limit.

Financial Support

Q: My Residency Program will receive a monthly stipend for my rotation. Can I use this stipend to pay for travel and accommodations in the DMV area for in-person days?

A: APTR does not dictate how residency stipends are paid to residents, or how residents are compensated overall by their program, but the expectation is the stipend should offset costs of participating fully in the rotation. As such, the stipend can be used to reimburse for travel and accommodations.

Q: Can the stipend be paid directly to me instead of my residency program?

A: No, stipends are always paid to the residency program at the end of the rotation.

Location

Q: Can I request a fully remote rotation during the application process?

A: Yes, placements consist of eight-week hybrid rotations with options for in-person and remote participation.

Q: Is housing provided for residents rotating from other states?

A: No, each resident is responsible for procuring their own temporary local housing if he or she chooses to reside locally. APTR provides a list of housing resources that includes executive furnished housing and other types of short-term rentals.
